Liam Stacey on Twitter

When Bolton's Patrice Muamba collapsed with a heart attack on the pitch during an FA cup match against Spurs, even the usually partisan football crowds were united in paying their respect as a young man received emergency treatment.

But on the internet - someone couldn't help themselves.

An appalling tirade - that revealed racism, misogyny and more. What could prompt a 21 year old student to suddenly announce to the world, on the back of tragedy, that he is a douche?

Wales winning the rugby? So puffed up - he thought he'd be as offensive as he could be about a potentially dying young man. What a charmer.

Our first PETARD goes to you Liam. You've certainly made a name for yourself for one so young - and that name is arsehole.

Hoist by their own petards

There have been four huge leaps in human communication:
  • The invention of writing - Mesopotamian cuneiform & Egyptian Hieroglyphs circa 3200 BCE
  • The invention of the alphabet - individual combinations of a set of "letters" circa 1850 BCE
  • The invention of the Gutenberg printing press - 1440 CE
  • The digital revolution - World Wide Web - Twitter and Facebook more recently
The current state of instant global communications, means that any individual on the planet can express their thoughts, and a second later, it can be read on the other side of the world.

This means that the accumulated wealth of all human knowledge, can be shared by everyone, to increase their collective experience of culture, arts, science, and humanity, that spark of intelligence that sees us nestled at the top of the evolutionary tree in terms of the power of our ingenuity and intellect in all the animal kingdom.

Sadly, this is not what has not happened. Because most people are dicks.

And some folk use the internet to communicate just that exact fact. Indeed, some are stupid dicks, and use their own names and their own personal accounts on twitter to expose their appalling attitudes.

For this - they should be thanked - as it means that the rest of us now know who they are. They have been hoist by their own pet hates.*

And can avoid them.

(Forgive the abysmal punning if you know what I'm referencing - but if you don't know the reference - google it - and you will learn something new!)
